Virgil O. Stone, 92, of St. James, MO, formerly of De Soto, IL passed away at 7:10 p.m., Wednesday, January 15, 2014 at his son's residence in St. James, MO. Virgil was born November 28, 1921 in Bush, IL to George Henry Lee and Elizabeth (Coleman) Stone. He married Ruth L. Barnett on June 1, 1941 in Perryville, MO. She preceded him in death on February 6, 1997. Virgil is survived by one son and daughter-in-law Gene and Renee Stone, of St. James, MO, one daughter and son-in-law Ann and Jack Lockwood of De Soto, Il, five grandchildren, nine great grandchildren, two great-great grandchildren, two nieces, three nephews and other family members and loved ones. He was preceded in death by one son, Johnny Leon Stone, his wife, Ruth, parents, three brothers and one sister. Virgil was employed as a railroad locomotive engineer for the Union Pacific until his retirement in May 1985. Virgil was of the Lutheran faith, member of Masonic Lodge, Columbia, IL; Consistory, Belleville, IL; Ainad Shrine Temple, East St. Louis, IL; and the VFW in Waterloo, IL. He proudly served in the Army during WW II, in the European-African-Middle Eastern Theater. A funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. on Saturday, January 18, 2014, at Meredith Funeral Home, Carbondale, with Rev. Preston Foster officiating. Burial, with military rites, will be at De Soto Cemetery. Visitation will be from 10:00 a.m. to service time on Saturday, at the funeral home. Memorial donations are the preferred form of remembrance and may be made to Christ the King Lutheran Church Building Fund, and will be accepted at the funeral home.
