Carbondale - Violet Irene (Crawshaw) Covington, 84, went to be with the Lord on Sunday, August 21, 2022, at her home surrounded by her family.
Violet was born on March 6, 1938, to Teddy Lawrence and Iva Irene (Wright) Crawshaw in Carbondale, IL. She married Amos Harold Covington on July 15, 1956 in Corinth, Mississippi.
Violet was one of nine children and she learned her work ethic by helping out on the family farm. As a young girl her first job was picking strawberries for another local farmer. Throughout the years, she worked in Carbondale at the Ben Franklin five and dime store and Glove factory. Soon after starting a family, she managed rental properties with her husband. Together, they built a thriving business.
Violet was a member of Union Hill Christian Church and was the junior choir director. She loved the Lord Jesus Christ and would joyfully sing his praises from the choir most Sunday mornings.
Violet was a natural athlete and excelled in many sports including softball, bowling, horseshoes, and washers. She coached the girls little league softball for several years in the community. Her sons were both wrestlers at Carbondale Community High School. Her and her husband were avid supporters of the wrestling community for many years even after their sons graduated. For their support, they were presented a plaque from the high school for being the most loyal wrestling fans.
Violet was a member of the local women’s club and enjoyed getting together with all of her friends and fellow club members. Many of the club members were also on the bowling teams that she played on through the years.
In 2006, Amos and Violet celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary with a marriage vow renewal ceremony at Union Hill Christian Church in Carbondale surrounded by their family and friends. They had 66 wonderful years together.
Like her name, Violet loved flowers, especially irises and day lilies. She personally worked hard for hours to make them beautiful. Each spring, her flower beds produced beautiful rainbows of bright colors that many friends and family would come to see.
Last Fall, the entire Covington family was able to get together for a beach trip at Carolina Beach, NC. No matter what, spending time with her family was what she loved most. She always made sure to let her family know that they were loved.
Violet always saw the beauty in little things and lived life to the fullest. She always shared her kindness with the world. She will be dearly missed by all her family and friends.
Violet was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Amos, son Victor Clint of Carbondale, Sisters Louise Doetch, Betty Hiller, Virginia Chamness, Doris Dover, Bob Crawshaw, Jeanette McGee, and Joan Cargine.
Violet is survived by sons Harold Terry Covington and Mark Wade (Diana) Covington, daughter Cindy Irene Covington; Four Grandchildren Holly Covington of Austin TX, Jen Covington (Troy) Hershberger of Wake Forest, NC, Thomas Jacob (Tiffany) Covington of High Point, NC, Ryan Covington of South Jordan, Utah; Three Great Grandchildren, Nolan, Mazie, and Finley of Wake Forest, NC, and Sister Anna Mary Rushing of Carbondale, IL.
