DE SOTO – It is with human sadness but Spiritual Joy the family of Vickie Covington Gooden, 74, announces her transition on Tuesday, September 10, 2019 with her loving husband by her side.
Vickie was born on January 31, 1945 in Carbondale to “PeeWee” R.E. and La Vera (Vaughn) Covington. She married Larry Gooden on July 11, 1989 in Wickliffe, Kentucky.
Vickie worked as a seamstress for over 25 years until she retired in 2010. She also worked as a village trustee for De Soto. She was a member of the Order of the Easter Star De Soto #790 where she served as secretary. Vickie also enjoyed crafting and sewing but her greatest joy were her family and granddaughter.
She is survived by her granddaughter, Jordan A Leatherman of Belleville; sister and brother-in-law, Vonda and Doug Schmitt of Webster Grove, MO; nieces and nephews, Scott Schmitt of St. Louis, Sara J. and Jesse Cole of Pacific, MO, Amy Schmitt of New Zealand, and Keith Leatherman of Troy; father-in-law, Willard (Joe) Hughes of De Soto; sisters-in-laws and brothers-in-laws, Eugene and Jennifer Gooden of Benton, Logan Gooden and Sonia of Mattoon, Joe and Kim Hughes of De Soto, Judy and Audie Walker of De Soto, Carrie and Brian Eggemeyer of Chester, Jakob Hughes of Hurst, Maddie Hughes of De Soto, Betty Sue Zimmerman of Austin, TX, Paula and Jimmy Reale of Leander, TX, Myra and Tim Gossett of Norris City, Sheryl Williams of Du Quoin, Bobbie Gooden of Dowell; and many nieces and nephews, and other relatives. A special Thank You for sister-in-law Kim Hughes and friend Amanda Williams.
Vickie was preceded in death by her parents; daughter, Teresa Ann Leatherman (2011); sons, Terry Tharp (1992) and Jason Michael Tharp (2007); and grandchild, Jennifer Dawn Leatherman (1989).
Funeral services will be Saturday, 11:00 AM on Saturday, September 14, 2019 at Meredith Funeral Home in Carbondale with Rev. John Annable officiating. Burial will follow in Egyptian Memorial Gardens in Energy. Visitation will be held from 5:00 – 7:00 PM on Friday, September 13, 2019 at the funeral home.
The preferred form of remembrance are memorials to Hospice of Southern Illinois and will be accepted at the funeral home.
