Verta E. Jackson

CARBONDALE – Verta Elizabeth Jackson, 90, formally of Carbondale, passed away on June 26, 2019 at Life Touch Hospice in El Dorado, AR.



Verta was born on September 8, 1928 to Floyd and Mary Lucy (Curry) Jones in Makanda. She married Allen Jackson on January 25, 1947 in Murphysboro. He preceded her in death on May 26, 1980.



Verta was a member of the First Baptist Church in Carterville. She worked as a cashier at Nutrition Headquarters and after her retirement, she served as a volunteer for the Memorial Hospital of Carbondale Auxiliary for over 30 years. Verta enjoyed her volunteer work, spending time with her family and writing poetry. Many of her poems have been published nationally and internationally.



Verta is survived by her son, Duane Jackson and wife Anita of Murfreesboro, TN; daughter, Sandra Miller and husband Ronnie of El Dorado, AR; grandchildren, Kevin Miller and wife Gina of McKinney, TX, Kimberly Moore of Williston, FL, and Brittany and Blake Jackson both of Murfreesboro, TN; great-grandchildren, Heath and Hayden of McKinney, TX and Gary Thomas Moore III and Nicole Moore both of Dyer, TN; sister, Donna Howell of Carterville; and several nieces, nephews and dear friends.



She is preceded in death by her parents; husband; and sisters, Thelma Snyder and Awanda Palmer.



Funeral services for Verta will be 1:30 PM on Friday, July 5, 2019 at Meredith Funeral Home in Carbondale with Pastor Ralph Brandon officiating. Visitation will be 12 – 1:30 PM on Friday at the funeral home. Burial will follow in Murdale Gardens of Memory, Murphysboro.

Memorials may be made to Memorial Hospital of Carbondale Auxiliary and will be accepted at the funeral home.
