CARBONDALE – Tommy Tolson Dunagan, 88, of Carbondale passed away on Saturday, December 7, 2019 at home surrounded by his loving family.
Tommy was born on October 17, 1931 to William and Erna (Gordon) Dunagan in Hamilton, Texas. He married Shirley Sue Rudd on August 12, 1956 in Maryville, TN.
Tommy is survived by his wife of over 60 years, Shirley; son, Ross Dunagan and wife Laurie of Weldon Spring, MO; daughter, Aurelia Dunagan of Weldon Spring, MO; and three grandchildren, Brian, Erika and Katelin Dunagan.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Tommy served his country as a Captain in the Air Force from 1953 – 1958 at the Arctic Aeromedical Laboratory in Alaska. He attended Texas A&M University where he received his Bachelor’s Degree and Master’s Degree in Zoology. He continued his education at Purdue University where he received his PhD in Physiology. Tommy worked as a Physiology Professor at Purdue University, Morehead State College and Southern Illinois University at Carbondale until his retirement in 1995. Tommy was involved in several organizations including the United Way, the Illinois JSHS, and the Illinois River to River Relay. He was an active member at University Baptist Church in Carbondale for 57 years.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, December 21, 2019 at 3:00 p.m. at University Baptist Church in Carbondale with Reverend John Annable officiating. Visitation will be from 2:00 p.m. until the time of service on Saturday at the church. Graveside services will be held on Saturday, December 28, 2019 at 1:00 p.m. at the IOOF Cemetery in Hamilton, TX.
Memorials may be made to the Restless Legs Syndrome Foundation in Austin, TX and will be accepted at the church.
