Theresa Magers

October 19, 1940 — October 10, 2015

Theresa Magers, aged 74, died peacefully on October 10th, 2015, at Memorial Hospital of Carbondale. Theresa was born on October 19th, 1940 in Chicago Heights, to Vincent and Helen (Girnis) LoBue. The second born of 11 children, Theresa grew up in Kankakee and graduated from Bishop McNamara High School (St. Patrick) where she enjoyed cheerleading and many other social activities. After high school graduation, Theresa worked for a rail road company in Chicago, until 1960 when she married and moved to a small town in Minnesota. In Minnesota, she worked as the secretary for St. Pious X Catholic Church located in Zimmerman where she also volunteered as their Kindergarten Sunday school teacher for 10+ years. For 8 years she was the school secretary for the Zimmerman Elementary School and she later worked for the Sherburne County Highway Department in Elk River, Minnesota. Throughout her life, Theresa felt it was very important to "give back" and she was very generous supporting community organizations such as the Girls Scouts, the Boy Scouts, her church, local food pantries, and various other not-for-profits. In 1980, Theresa moved to Normal and worked for GTE in Bloomington. In 1983, Theresa met the love of her life, Moss "Ed" Magers and on December 5th, 1985 they eloped to Paducah, Kentucky. Theresa and Ed moved to Irving, Texas in 1993 to continue their careers with GTE. Theresa finished out her career at GTE, retiring in 1998. In 2013, Theresa and Ed moved to Carbondale to be closer to family and friends. Nothing gave Theresa more pleasure than spending time at their retirement lake home with her grandchildren, great grandchildren, other family members and friends. However; as much as they loved their lake home, they also enjoyed wintering in South Padre Island with old and new friends. Theresa was a wonderful mother raising four children of her own and later in life enjoyed loving 5 additional children in her blended family. In her retirement she was activity involved with the American Legion Auxiliary Unit 453, Dallas, Texas and volunteered at the Saint Andrew Catholic School in Murphysboro. Above all, Theresa loved her 30 years of marriage with her husband Ed Magers, her family and friends, her faith, gardening, traveling, and the joys of nature. She was preceded in death by her parents, infant brother Vincent Jr., and a sister-in-law Theresa (Magers) Judy. Theresa is survived by her husband and their nine children; Glen V. Thompson (Victoria), Gregg M. Thompson (Ann), Jodi M.
