Teresa Smith

CARBONDALE - Teresa L. Smith, 64, passed away on Monday, January 15, 2024 at her home surrounded by her loving family.

Teresa was born on January 3, 1960 in Carbondale to Maurice "Ed" Betts and Laverne (Brewer) Chastain. Teresa married Bobby Smith on December 17, 1976 in Jackson County.

Teresa worked for Unity Point School for almost thirty years as part of the kitchen staff. She loved going to the beach in Florida, feeding the hummingbirds, scrapbooking, playing the slot machines at the riverboat casino and pool time with the kids. Teresa enjoyed holiday traditions, even making costumes and dressing up with her kids. She would always bring the family together documenting each event with video and pictures. Most of all she loved spending time with her grandchildren.

Teresa is survived by her loving husband, Bobby Smith of Carbondale; daughter, Salina (Brian) Holloway of Carterville; son, Bobby (Kylie) Smith, Jr. of Murphysboro; grandchildren, Jonathon Holloway and Jaxon Smith; mother, Laverne (J.T.) Chastain of De Soto; brother, Eddie Betts of Guthrie, OK; sisters, Belinda (Jimmy) Hill of Cobden and Mattie (Mike) White of Saint Louis, MO; step-mother, Margee Betts of Makanda; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her father and step-father.

Funeral Services for Teresa will be held at 5:00pm on Friday, January 19, 2024 at Meredith Funeral Home with Rev. Jerry Cochran officiating. Visitation will be from 3:00pm until the time of service on Friday at the funeral home. Private burial will take place at Oakland Cemetery in Carbondale at a later date.

Memorials may be made in Teresa's name to Hospice of Southern Illinois or American Cancer Society and will be accepted at the funeral home.
