CARBONDALE - Sidney G. Smith died peacefully on January 31, 2025 at Highland Park Hospital, Highland Park, Illinois. He was born to Charles Prentiss and Neva (Guthrie) Smith on March 12, 1938. They and his sister, Anne Elizabeth and his brother, Charles Everett Smith preceded him in death.
He is survived by his loving wife, Alice (Varnold) Smith with whom he recently celebrated their 64th wedding anniversary, his beloved daughters, Brenda Elizabeth Smith and Sarah Kathryn Stanley and his son-in-law Philip Stanley. He took great pride and loved his four grandchildren who also survive him, Allison Jane and Thea Elizabeth Ferdinand, Kyra Lee and Ian Charles Stanley. He is also survived by his sister-in-law, Brenda V. Dilts; his niece Lyn (Dilts) Snowman (Shawn) and his nephews Eric Dilts and Ken Varnold; his cousins and other family members and friends.
He was a Carbondale resident since 1970. He was a pediatrician at the Carbondale Clinic and later he was an Assistant Professor in the SIU Medical School Physician Assistant Program in Carbondale.
He was a graduate of Illinois Wesleyan University and Northwestern University Medical School. He had his internship and residency at St. Francis Hospital in Peoria, Illinois. He served in the US Navy in Norfolk, Virginia.
He served on the Board of Trustees for Illinois Wesleyan University for many years where he is a Trustee Emeritus. He was an active member of the Carbondale First United Methodist Church where he enjoyed singing in the Sanctuary Choir. As an avid organist, he enjoyed being a member of the Southern Illinois Chapter of the American Guild of Organists.
Gifts in his memory may be made to: The Boys and Girls Club of Southern Illinois-Carbondale site, First United Methodist Church of Carbondale-Music Pipe Organ Fund, and Illinois Wesleyan University.
His burial Committal service will be private. His memorial service will be at a future date and will be announced on this website.
