Ruth Selma Smith

Carbondale – Ruth Selma (Rasche) Smith, 94, of Carbondale passed away on Tuesday, February 28, 2017, at Manor Court of Carbondale.



Ruth was born on April 18, 1922 to Fred and Selma (Nothdurft) Rasche in Aviston. She married Sidney Eugene Smith on April 17, 1941 and spent 56 happy years together until he preceded her in death. As did her son David K. Smith, her sister Grace and brother Carlton.



Survivors include her sister Betty June Rotramel of Carbondale. Daughter Sharon R. Granderson (husband Chris Heinzel). Three grandchildren, James Smith, Gerod Smith-Gomez, and Melissa Granderson. They blessed her with six great-grandchildren.



Ruth was retired after many years as the office manager in the Department of Sociology at Southern IL University. She was active in the First United Methodist Church of Carbondale and was active on various committees including the Carbondale class of 1940 High-School Reunion. Ruth enjoyed taking care of others and helping those in need. She had the gift of Unconditional Love for all. Her memory will continue to live on through the many people she helped and the many people that loved her.



Services for Ruth will be Tuesday, March 7, 2017 at 6:00 pm in First United Methodist Church in Carbondale with pastors Alan Rhein and John Annable officiating. Visitation will be in the church fellowship hall from 5:00 until 6:00 pm.



Memorials are the preferred form of remembrance and may be made to the family to assist with medical expenses. Memorials will be accepted during the visitation at the First United Methodist Church.
