John Russell Howell, 65, peacefully entered eternal rest on July 9, 2024 at Barnes-Jewish Hospital with his family by his side.
Russell was born on March 20, 1959 to John and Phyllis Howell (Nance) in Tacoma, Washington. He graduated from Carbondale Community High School in 1977 and became a Brick Mason for 23 years.
He loved people and didn’t know a stranger, but the people he loved most were his family. Taking care of them made him so proud, especially his wife, Rosemary. Russell was an outstanding father, husband, brother, uncle and son. He had a big heart, which could be felt by all who knew him.
Russell was a true outdoorsman who loved fishing, hunting and gardening. He served as President of Backwater’s Bass Club for more than 20 years. He also holds the title of “Best fishing buddy” to his son and best friend, Patrick. Russell planted and grew sunflower patches filled with flowers that stretch toward the sky.
Survivors include Russell’s wife Rosemary, sons Patrick and Jeremy Howell all of Makanda, mother Phyllis Howell of Cobden, brothers Wayne (Sue) of Grandin, Mo Rodney (Winnie) of Makanda and Jesse (Fiancée Mary) of Cobden. Aunts Francis Pearson of Cobden and Dorris Nossett of Muncie, Indiana and Uncle Alvis Howell of Murphysboro and many nieces, nephews and cousins. He will be missed dearly by many more who love him, including his close friends Bob and Cathy Sanders.
Russell was preceded in death by his father, John, and both sets of grandparents.
