Roger "Coon Hunter" Cavness

Grand Tower - Roger "Coon Hunter" Cavness, 59, of Grand Tower, passed away 5:00 p.m. Friday, January 8, 2016 surrounded by his loving friends and family at St. Francis Medical Center in Cape Girardeau. Funeral service for Roger will be at 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, January 12, 2016 at Lighthouse Christian Assembly in Grand Tower with Pastors Peggy Camp and Jack Thornton officiating. Visitation will be on Monday, January 11, 2016 at Lighthouse Christian Assembly, from 5:00 until 8:00 p.m. Burial will be in Walker Hill Cemetery, Grand Tower. As the preferred form of remembrance the family requests memorial contributions be made to the Arthritis Foundation or to the American Diabetes Association. Envelopes will be available and accepted at the church. Roger was born on November 15, 1956 at Cape Girardeau, MO to Walter and Margaret (Gregory) Cavness. He married Frances Lynn Taylor on July 20, 1977 at Murphysboro and she survives. Survivors include his loving wife, Fran Cavness of Grand Tower; daughter, Melissa Cavness and fianc�� Bill Vest of Grand Tower; son and daughter-in-law, Nathan and Dianna Smith of Anna; five grandchildren who were the light of his life, Darien, Hunter, Haleigh, Amber and Justin; two sisters, Jane Beard of Centralia and Donna Cavness of Wolf Lake; one brother, Lynn Cavness of McClure; one special brother-in-law Vernon Harris of Centralia; one step-brother, Jerry Speers of DuQuoin; and several nieces, nephews, special friends and family members. Roger was preceded in death by his parents, Walter and Marybelle Cavness, and Margaret Bray; two sisters, Pat Smith and Linda Harris; and one brother, Kenneth Cavness. Roger worked as a farmer for many years and later worked as a sheet rock installer in the construction trade until disabled. He was known for his time spent as the Grand Tower Levee Commissioner. His expertise with the levee was legendary and will never be replaced. Roger enjoyed outdoor activities and was an avid hunter and fisherman. He was of the Baptist Faith. Roger helped anyone in need and will be missed by all.
