Robert M. "Bob" Dorris

Carbondale - Robert M. "Bob" Dorris, 73, passed away at 4:47 p.m. on Sunday, September 15, 2013 at his home with his loving family by his side. Bob was born May 26, 1940 in Elwood, IN to James M. and Anna Catherine (Wright) Dorris. They precede him in death. He married Sharon Sue Shingleton on September 23, 1961 in Anaheim, CA. She survives and is of Carbondale. Other survivors include, three daughters and son-in-law, Anna Catherine Dorris of Carbondale, Diedre (Matthew E.) Hodges of Stafford, VA, and Jennifer S. Wickham of Carbondale; three brothers, Jim (Mary) Dorris of Coral Springs, FL, John (Janice) Dorris of Belleville and Victor (Mary Lynn) Dorris of Centralia; two sisters, Lynn Glick of Anthem, AZ, and Karen (Joe) Shepela of Encinitas, CA; five grandchildren; 2 great grandchildren and his buddy, Cody, the family dog. Bob retired from the US Marine Corp after 24 years of service, with 6 reserves. After his retirement, he worked security in King Bay, GA. He was affiliated with the 1st Christian Church in Centralia. He was the Commander of the American Legion Post #514 in Carbondale, and a member of the Marine Corp League, of Carbondale, and Point Mt. Mugu of CA. Services will be at 11:00 a.m., Thursday, September 19, 2013 at Meredith Funeral Home, Carbondale, with Rev. John Annable officiating. Interment will be at Oakland Cemetery, Carbondale with Military Rites performed by the 3rd Battalion 23rd Marines. Visitation will be from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Wednesday, September 18, 2013 at the funeral home. Memorial donations are the preferred form of remembrance and may be made to Hospice of Southern Illinois, which will be accepted at the funeral home.
