Carbondale - Robert "Bob" Spires, 91, passed away at 5:45 p.m. on Saturday, July 4, 2015 at his home. Bob was born December 25, 1923 in Herrin, to Lem Samuel and Laura (Carico) Spires. He married Ruth A. Harlan in Carbondale. She preceded him in death on November 25, 2006. Bob is survived by his two sons, Jeff and Keith Spires both of Carbondale; and his daughter, Sheila (Terry) Glassman of Murphysboro; one sister, Norma Johnson of Carterville; three grandchildren, Frank Boucher, Tori Cooper and Tommy Singleton; and a host of nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his sister, Pauline Spires. In 1935 his parents founded Spires Grocery, and then in 1945 they opened Spires Wholesale. In 1983, Bob and Pauline managed and changed the name to Spires Wholesale Grocery. After Pauline passed away, Sheila, already a part of the firm, was promoted to manager, which continues today and is now known as Spires Wholesale Grocery. Bob proudly served in the Army during WWII. He received 2 Bronze Stars and a Medal for his time served. He was of Methodist faith and a member of Grace United Methodist Church of Carbondale. Services will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, July 11, 2015, at Meredith Funeral Home of Carbondale with Reverend In-Sook Hwang officiating. Burial will follow at Oakland Cemetery in Carbondale. Family and friends may call upon the funeral home from 11:00 a.m. until the time of service. Memorials are the preferred form of remembrance and may be made to Grace United Methodist Church of Carbondale, and will be accepted at the funeral home.
