Philip V. Thorne, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather and brother passed away on March 3, 2025. Born in Chicago, Illinois, Philip was the adopted son of Russel and Maude Vincent Thorne. He grew up in Belleville and attended Belleville Community High School.

In 1951, Phil began his academic and athletic journey at Southern Illinois University (SIU), where he played on the SIU Football team. He served as a Marine before returning to SIU to wrestle and complete his education, graduating in 1955. He later received a master's degree in education.

During his time at SIU, Phil met the love of his life, Mary Francelle Thorne. They moved together to Hinsdale and Downers Grove, eventually settling in Naperville, Illinois. Their marriage spanned an impressive 62 years. Phil embarked on a fulfilling career in education, profoundly impacting the lives of countless students as a high school teacher and through his various coaching roles spanning the sports of football, wrestling, and track.

Upon retirement, Phil and Fran returned to southern Illinois, making their home at Lake of Egypt. Phil enjoyed boating, hiking, and spending quality time with family and friends. He is survived by his sister, Elizabeth Anne Stout of Naperville, Illinois; his son, William “Woody” Thorne and wife Rita; his daughter, Frances Anne Van Norman and husband Greg; and his grandchildren, Mary Heltsley and husband Jarrod, Chuck Lauder and wife Paige, Michelle Murphy and husband Dugan, Mitch Lauder, Chris Van Norman, Julia Van Norman, and Ellie Van Norman. He is also survived by his great-grandchildren, Hannah Heltsley, Harper Heltsley, Alayna Lauder, Alexa Lauder, Austin Lauder, and Rollins Murphy. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews.

Phil and Fran were avid and dedicated Salukis, often attending sporting events both at home and away. They formed special relationships with many individuals throughout their lives. His strong faith guided him through life, and he served as a role model for family and friends.

Phil's enduring legacy of love, dedication, and mentorship will be cherished by all who had the privilege of knowing him. His contributions to his family, education, and sports have left a lasting impact on the lives of many.
