Penny Gay Pullen

January 9, 1962 — January 18, 2023

CARBONDALE - Penny Gay Pullen, 61 of Carbondale passed away January 18, 2023 following a short illness. Born in Paducah, Kentucky, Penny is survived by her wife, Kim Doerfler, her mother, Kay Ivitts, mother-in-law, Irma Doerfler, brother Dwayne (Amy), sister Joy (Tracy), brother-in-law Todd (Julie), nephews Stephen, Scotty, Trey, Chase, Josh and Jack and her substantial friend family. She was preceded in death by her brother Tony.


Penny moved to Carbondale in the 1980's to pursued degrees at John A. Logan College and Southern Illinois University graduating with a Bachelor's degree in Biology. Following graduation, Penny moved to Fort Lauderdale, Florida and received a nursing degree from Barry University. Penny was employed as a home health Registered Nurse for several agencies in Florida over the next 20 years and upon her relocation to southern Illinois began a five-year career with Residential Home Health. The care for her patients was paramount to her.


Penny enjoyed feeding the wildlife around her home, spending time with her family, her extended friend family, her three giant labs and fishing. Her sunny disposition, warm smile and loving heart made her a cherished friend to many.


A celebration of Penny's life will be held at First Christian Church, 306 W. Monroe St. Carbondale on Saturday, January 28 at 10:30 a.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Francis Care Animal Shelter.
