Pearl A. Grammer

September 23, 2014 — February 24, 2013

CARBONDALE - Pearl A. Grammer, 98, of Carbondale passed away at 7:35 a.m., Sunday, February 24, 2013, at Carbondale Rehab and Care Center, Carbondale. She was born September 23, 1914 to William and Lavenia (Penrod) Lipe in Pomona Township. She grew up on the farm and attended Dutch Ridge Baptist Church until she was married and moved away. She worked picking strawberries for one cent a quart when she was young. She said all the kids went on strike to get a raise and their pay was raised to two cents a quart. Pearl and her sister, Mable, picked blackberries until they had enough money to buy a pump organ which the family enjoyed for many years. She attended Antioch Country School in her early years and graduated from the 8th grade. Before she was married, she worked at the Glove Factory in Carbondale. She lived with friends during the week and went home on the weekends. She paid her rent by buying groceries for the family. She married Gus Grammer on November 16, 1936 in Marion. To this union, two children were born, Susie and Richard "Dick." Gus worked for GTE and the family moved often, finally settling in Carbondale in 1955. Pearl worked for S.S. Kresge in Harrisburg and when they moved to Carbondale, she began working for F.W. Woolworth from which she retired in 1980. After her retirement, she worked as an election judge for many years which she thoroughly enjoyed. Pearl always enjoyed visiting with relatives and could talk on the phone for hours. She loved her family and when the children were young, they all enjoyed Sunday dinners at her house. She loved to sing the old church hymns and would sit at the piano and play and sing for hours. She entertained all the grandchildren. Pearl is survived by her daughter, Susie (Frank) Tebow; son, Richard "Dick" (Joan) Grammer; four grandchildren, Stephannie (Jeff) Sill, Mary Beth Walters, Becky Sue Grammer, and Richard Scot (Stephanie) Grammer; nine great grandchildren, Rachel and Joshua Tebow, Brooke Lynn Miller, Scott Edward Walters, Chelsea, Brittany and Don Michael Donker, Matthew and Sarah Grammer; two great great-grandchildren, Ian Miller and Hyden Hopkins; brother-in-law, Warren Grammer; and many nieces. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, Gus, who passed away July 21, 1985, two sisters, Mable Shade and Chole Brewer, three brothers, Merle "Buddy" Lipe (Pearl's twin who died at age 5), Elta Lipe and Rudolph Lipe, grandson, Frank G Tebow III, great grandson Frank G Tebow IV and many nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be Saturday, March 2, 2013 at 10:30 a.m. at Meredith Funeral Home, in Carbondale with Reverends Wes Henson and Paul Hicks officiating. Interment will be at Dutch Ridge Cemetery.
