Carbondale - Elizabeth Nella Lougeay, 94, passed away 8:34 a.m., Monday, October 12, 2015 in Carbondale surrounded by her family. Nella was born July 13, 1921 in Cinderford, England, to William George and Olivia (Penn) Matthews. She married Paul James Lougeay on May 30, 1945, at the First United Methodist Church of Carbondale. They shared 59 years of marriage. He preceded her in death on September 28, 2004. Nella is survived by two daughters, Joan (Jim) Temple and Anne (Don) Barrett all of Carbondale; five grandchildren, Matthew Wright, Katie Hickam, Megan Batteau, Ryan Temple, and Alex Barrett; and six great grandchildren, Grace and Declan Hickam, Braden and Addyson Wright, Liam and Graham Batteau. She was preceded in death by her husband, sister and parents. One of her passions was teaching, and sharing her knowledge with students. She taught at the Ava High School from 1943 - 1945. She organized the steno pool at the Defense Plant in Madison, IL and was a secretary for the US Navy in Boston, MA. Nella retired in 1983 after working for 14 years at SIU as an Academic Advisor. She was a member of the P.E.O. Chapter KZ, Beta Sigma Phi Laureate Beta Eta, SIU Women's Club, Alumni Association and the Emeritus Association. She was also a member of the Wednesday afternoon Bridge Club and a long-time member of the First Presbyterian Church of Carbondale. A Memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, October 16, 2015 at the First Presbyterian Church of Carbondale with Rev. Janice C. West officiating. Memorial donations are the preferred form of remembrance and may be made to the First Presbyterian Church of Carbondale, or the Paul J. Lougeay Memorial Scholarship in Architecture % SIU Foundation and will be accepted by Meredith Funeral Home of Carbondale.
