AVA - With heavy hearts yet fond memories, we celebrate the life of Mary Louise Carruthers, who passed away on December 30, 2024, at the age of 66, with her family by her side. Born in Springfield, on November 29, 1958, Mary brought joy, kindness, and a passion for life to those who knew her.
Mary dedicated her career as a secretary at Southern Illinois University Carbondale, where she was a beloved member of the university community. After she retired, she worked part-time at the Good Samaritan House in Carbondale. She was known for her unwavering support of others and her ability to make everyone feel valued and respected. Her good heart extended beyond her professional life; she had a profound love for animals and a deep appreciation for the beauty of gardening.
Mary is survived by her devoted husband, Jeffrey Carruthers; her loving children, Elizabeth (Brenden) and Michael (Alisha) Carruthers; and her cherished sister, Janet (Steve Chrispen) Voss. These beloved family members will carry forward her spirit of kindness and generosity.
To honor Mary’s life and legacy, a memorial gathering will be held on 4:00 pm – 6:00 pm January 11, 2025 at Meredith Funeral Home in Carbondale. Friends, family, and all whose lives were touched by Mary are warmly invited to join us in celebrating the blessings she brought to our lives.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the Good Samaritan House or St. Francis Care Animal Shelter and will be accepted at the funeral home.
Mary was preceded in death by her parents, Richard and Phyllis Voss; nephews, Joshua and Richard; and her brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Steve and Margaret Carruthers.
