CARBONDALE – Reverend Mark Stephen Lohnes, 68, passed away at 12:25 P.M., Tuesday, January 7, 2025, surrounded by his wife and children, at Manor Court of Carbondale, IL.
He was born in Garden City, KS the son of Paul and Lynn (Kook) Lohnes on September 14, 1956. He married Sheri Lynn Bray on December 4, 1977, in Ashkum, IL. Mark and Sheri were married for 47 years. They were blessed with five children who survive, three sons, Levi (Mayumi) Lohnes of Nashville, TN, Jessie (Shiela) Lohnes of Anna, IL, and Ian (Emily) Lohnes of Chyenne, WY, and two daughters, Mandy (Christopher) Archer of Kettering, OH, and Amber (Ren) Vitug of Jacksonville, FL. Mark is also survived by one brother, David Lohnes of Morris, IL, two sisters, Kay Howell of Bethalto, IL, and Christine (Tim) Klarkson of Stauton, IL. Mark and Sheri were also blessed with 11 grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents.
Reverend Lohnes served the Lord for nearly 38 years as an ordained LCMS Lutheran pastor, ministering in churches and to those in need. Pastor Lohnes started his ministry in Golconda, IL, before moving on to Yale, South Dakota. From there, he went on to minister in Houston, MO, Okawville, IL, Carmi, IL, and finished up in Ashgrove, IL. Throughout that time, Pastor Lohnes served as a chaplain in the U.S. Army Reserves, providing spiritual support and guidance to soldiers in times of need. After retirement, he ministered to individuals and gave guest sermons at various churches. Mark and Sheri enjoyed their retirement in Carbondale, IL, near their children and grandchildren. Upon retirement, his greatest joys were fishing, playing guitar, and painting.
Mark’s life was a beautiful melody of faith, family, and music, played with love and devotion. His legacy, woven through every sermon preached, musical note played, and painting composed, was crafted with love and devotion to his Lord.
Pastor Lohnes’ family will hold a memorial service celebrating his life this Spring once fishing season begins.
