Carbondale -Mardell Banks, 84, passed away at 12:04 a.m. January 30, 2014, in her home. Mardell was born in Perry, IL on September 14, 1929, to Benjamin Willis and Myrtle Ann (Seaborn) Greiwe. She was united in marriage with C. Wayne Banks in September, 1994 in Granite City. He preceded her in death on August 25, 2010. Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, Thomas W. and Carol E. Banks of Carbondale; brother and sister-in-law, Cordell and Mary Greiwe of Springfield; five grandchildren, Brian (Courtney) Wilson, Robi (John) Stephenson all of Ava, Jennifer (Jason) Koch of Lafayette, IN, Andrew (Sarah Newman) Banks of Carbondale and Tommy Banks of Ft Bliss, TX; five great grandchildren, Trenton Wilson, Kinion Stephenson, Abi and Preston Koch and Parker Banks; and a host of nieces, nephews and friends. She was preceded in death by her first husband, Harvey Folks, brother, Fred Greiwe and her parents. Mardell worked in the Finance Department for the Granite City Army Depot until her retirement. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother, and will be missed by many. A funeral service will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, February 1, 2014 at the Irwin Funeral Home, 3960 Maryville Road, Granite City with Dr. Rev. K. Stephen Combs officiating. Interment will be at the Sunset Hill Memorial Estates in Glen Carbon. A visitation will also be held at the Irwin Funeral Home, from noon to service time on Saturday. Memorials are the preferred form of remembrance and may be made to the Hospice of Southern Illinois at 204 Halfway Road, Marion, IL 62959.
