CARBONDALE - Lewis Edwin Akers, 77, of Carbondale passed away on Sunday, May 15, 2022 at Memorial Hospital of Carbondale.

Lewis was born on December 31, 1944 in Moline, Illinois to Edward and Louise (Carahan) Akers. Lewis married Judy Major on June 16, 1979 in Chester, Illinois.

Lewis owned and operated Jackson Printing and Publishing in Murphysboro for over 20 years. Lewis was actively involved in Scouting for over 70 years earning many awards, including most recently the Boy Scouts Big Muddy District Lifetime Achievement Award and the Silver Beaver Award. Lewis was involved in all aspects of Scouting but he was most proud of the time he spent as Cubmaster of Pack 112 and Scoutmaster of Troop 114 in Murphysboro. He loved to go boating, fishing, shooting sports, and any outdoor activity. Most of all, Lewis enjoyed spending time with his family and friends.

Lewis is survived by his wife, Judy Akers; sons, Matthew, Michael; daughters, Lisa, Lori, and Cassandra; grandchildren, Justin, Jeffrey, Tyler, Zachary, Dakota, Trayten, Mykol, Cheyenne, Autumn, Makayla, Mariah, Ali, Samantha, and 16 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents and sister, Margaret Akers.

A Celebration of Life service will be announced at a later date.

Memorials may be made in Lewis's name to Scout Troop 133 for future camp scholarships and projects. Donations made be to Troop 133 c/o Meredith Funeral Home; 300 S. University Avenue; Carbondale, IL 62901.
