Lawrence Edwin Schilling, 73, passed away on Sunday, March 9, 2025 from pancreatic cancer at his home surrounded by his loving family.
Lawrence was born on December 8, 1951 to Charles and Mary (Mathews) Schilling, the youngest of four siblings. He married Robin Ray on June 25, 1983. They were blessed with the birth of their daughter, Sonia ("Rosie") Schilling, on January 1, 1985.
Lawrence cherished his childhood in Waterloo, Illinois. He moved to Carbondale in 1969 to attend SIU and graduated in 1975 with a BS in Science Education. He later completed a MS in Computer Based Education in 1983. Lawrence began his career as a science teacher. He became an early expert in personal computer technology, leading him to start a business providing training and support to a variety of private corporations and public institutions. His expertise took him to his career of 21 years at SIU Carbondale, starting as a Research Analyst and culminating as Director of Institutional Research and Studies for 11 years until his retirement in 2011.
Lawrence's strongest passion in life was as a loving husband, father and uncle. He was ever patient and kind to all who knew him. Lawrence was a renaissance man pursuing a wide variety of interests including motocross racing, collecting vintage sports cars and playing golf. He was a lifelong student of history and geology and loved music, especially traditional Irish, classical, and rock. He was devoted to his dogs his entire life.
Lawrence is survived by his wife, Robin Ray, daughter Sonia ("Rosie") Schilling of Nashville, Tennessee, and numerous nieces and nephews from across the country. He is preceded in death by his parents and siblings Irene McCarthy, Rose Roscow, and Charlie Schilling.
A gathering celebrating Lawrence's life is planned for Sunday June 1, 2025, from one to four pm, at Blue Sky Winery.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to ASPCA, an organization close to Lawrence's heart.
