Carbondale - Judith Colleen Foland, 78, of Carbondale, passed away at 6:59 p.m. on Sunday, April 28, 2013 at Memorial Hospital of Carbondale. Judy was born May 2, 1934 in Nowata, Oklahoma, to John Butler and Genevieve Lorraine (Illingsworth) Hurd. She married Neal Eugene Foland on March 31, 1956 in Plattsburg, Missouri. He survives and is of Carbondale. Other survivors include; a son, Michael Tad Foland of Carbondale; five daughters, Debbie (Steve) Telligman of Freelandville, Indiana, Kim (James) Collins of Springfield, Tracie (Terry) Mick of Grand Tower, Cheryl (Sam) Warner of Murrieta, California and Cassie (David) Burnett of Springfield; fourteen grandchildren and twenty great grandchildren. Judy was preceded in death by, her parents and daughter-in-law, Denise Cooper Foland. She had a Bachelor's of Science degree, and worked as a Secretary for A.G. Edwards and then a Financial Aid Officer at Southern Illinois University of Carbondale until her retirement. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Carbondale. Judy was a passionate person who lived a full life. She loved spending time with her family, which for her meant more than those who were blood related. It was always known that friends and acquaintances alike were welcomed with open arms to holiday and family gatherings. Through the years she spent countless hours helping others through organizations such as the The Humane Shelter, Girl Scouts, church, or by simply lending a hand or a wise and sympathetic ear to others. She was a creative person who enjoyed a wide variety of interest including music, reading, theater, cooking, sewing, and playing games with family and friends. With her husband, Neal, Judy became an avid world traveler who sought to experience and embrace the countless cultures they encountered. They explored all of the continents of the world as well as lived in Beirut, Lebanon and Nakajo, Japan. She spent her life dedicated to her family and with an enthusiastic desire to learn and truly experience life. Near and far she will be fondly remembered by those whose lives she touched. A Memorial service will be held at The First Presbyterian Church, in Carbondale at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, May 3, 2013, with Pastor Janice West officiating. Visitation will be from 1:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m., Friday, May 3, 2013 at the church. Memorial donations are the preferred form of remembrance and may be made to The First Presbyterian Church, Carbondale, American Diabetes Association or Susan G. Komen for the Cure, and will be accepted at the church. Meredith Funeral Home, Carbondale, is assisting the family with arrangements.
