Joyce M. "Mama" Hawthorne

De Soto - Joyce M. "MaMa" Hawthorne, 71, passed away on Thursday, March 20, 2014 at her residence, with her family by her side. Joyce was born February 23, 1943 in Carbondale to the late Reverend William Hubert and Velma Rene (English) Lindsey. She married Donald Hawthorne on November 19, 1961 in De Soto. They celebrated a wonderful 53 years together. He survives and is of De Soto. Other survivors include, two daughters, Christina Tripp and Rebecca (Tim) Hicks all of De Soto; her son, Timmy Hawthorne of De Soto; seven grandchildren, Brittany Hawthorne, Josh Hicks, Kyle Tripp, Jordan Hicks, Keegan Tripp, Jaxson and Hatty Hawthorne; one great grandson, Aiden Etherton; a host of nephews, nieces and cousins; and her caregiver, Judy Johnson of Murphysboro. Joyce was preceded in death by her parents, and ten siblings. She was a cook at Glendale School for many years, and loved cooking for many people. She was known by her CB name as "Parts Runner" for the family business. She had also worked at the Flower Box in Carbondale for 15 years, and was a member of the Red Hat Club and Murdale Baptist Church. Joyce was very devoted to her family, she enjoyed the family sports, especially when her grandchildren were playing. She will be missed by many. Services will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, March 22, 2014 at Murdale Baptist Church in Carbondale, with Reverend Paul Hicks officiating. Interment will be at McKinney Hill Cemetery in Carbondale. A visitation will be from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. on Saturday at the church. Memorial donations are the preferred form of remembrance and may be made to the Murdale Baptist Church, Hospice of Southern Illinois, or the Coach Kill Cancer Fund, and will be accepted by Meredith Funeral Home of Carbondale.
