CARBONDALE - Joseph Lee Burrow, 92, passed away on Wednesday, July 31, 2024 at his home. He leaves behind a legacy of love and laughter that will be cherished by all who knew him.
Joseph was born on September 8, 1931 in Neelyville, MO to Joseph and Dovie (Griffith) Burrow. Joseph married Mabel Lucille Heern on June 5, 1963 at East St. Louis, Illinois. They shared over 60 years of marriage together.
Joseph served his country in the US Marines from 1952 until 1954 in the Korean War. After his military service, he pursued a successful career as a truck driver. He had a love for hunting, fishing, and even deep-sea fishing. He was also a die-hard St. Louis Cardinals baseball fan, cheering for his team with unwavering enthusiasm. Joseph enjoyed sports, especially playing horseshoes and bottlecaps, and was even a champion horseshoe player earning many trophies. He was an active member in many organizations including being a member of the Makanda Baptist Church, Makanda Masonic Lodge #434; VFW Post #12039 in Victorville, CA, and the Downey Moose Lodge #663.
Known for being a provider and a builder, he oversaw and helped build “The House on the Hill”. He will forever be cherished in the hearts of those who knew him. His love for life and unwavering dedication to his family will always be remembered with fondness and admiration.
Joseph is survived by his loving wife Lucille; children, Vickie Jo Wagner, Danny Burrow, James Burrow, Martha Petrillo; grandchildren, Donna Tritsarolis, Walter Simmons, Lupe Lopez, Nicholas Lopez, Luciano Lopez, Raudel Zesati, Lorrie Reynolds, Linda Duke, Alicia Bacarro, Jessica Burrow, Joshua Burrow, Scott Hensley, Jaime Stewart, Christine Dement, Crystal Hudson, Nick O'Connor, Justin O'Connor, Brandy Tsuchiya, Joey Burrow, Amber Peebels, and William Petrillo; numerous great and great-great grandchildren; and many other family members.
He was preceded in death by his parents; son, Rickie Burrow; daughter, Robbin Burrow; two brothers; and three sisters.
Visitation will be held on Monday, August 5, 2024 from 10:00am until 11:45am at the Makanda Baptist Church with Masonic Rites starting at 11:45am. The Memorial Service for Joseph will start at 12:00pm at the church on Monday with Pastors Dennis Nance and Lupe Lopez officiating. Inurnment will take place across the street at the Evergreen Makanda Cemetery with full Military Honors following the service.
Memorials may be made in Joseph’s name to Makanda Evergreen Cemetery and will be accepted at the church.
