John R. Savitz

CARBONDALE – John R. Savitz, 79, passed away on Sunday, August 13, 2023 at his home.

John was born on September 8, 1943 to Jack and Helen (Austin) Savitz in Carbondale. He married Ardell Smith on July 11, 1962 in Carbondale.

John is survived by his wife, Ardell; brother-in-law, Charles Smith and wife, Dana; sisters-in-law, Eleanor Robinson and husband, Oliver and Shena Weshinskey and husband, Kern.

He was preceded in death by his parents; son, John K. Savitz; grandson, Wesley J. Savitz; one brother and three sisters.

John served his country in the U.S. Navy for twenty years. During his time in the Navy he was the FTBC on several submarines. After his service in the Navy he returned to Carbondale and worked for Consolidated Coal as a scaleman for many years. He loved spending time outdoors and enjoyed fishing and hunting. Most of all John loved riding his Harley Davidson.

A memorial service for John with military honors will be held at 2:00pm on Sunday, September 10, 2023 at South County Line Cemetery, Carbondale. 

Memorials may be made to St. Jude’s Childrens Hospital.
