CARBONDALE -- After a long and productive life John "Jack" Frank Hayward died at home Sept. 24, 2012. He was born May 8, 1918 in Winthrop, Mass., to Catherine and Frank Hayward. When he was six years old his family moved to Wellesley, a western suburb of Boston. His lifelong love of nature began in the woods around this house. By then he had a brother, Harris Starr Hayward. While in high school he met a well-known Unitarian minister and theologian who became his friend and mentor, James Luther Adams. Adams encouraged him to go to Harvard. When he told his father with some trepidation that he indeed would like to go there his father said, "Son, I always hoped you would." Jack received his bachelor's degree in 1940. His chief delight while at Harvard was being in the Harvard Glee Club. He sang in many public concerts, including some with the Boston Symphony. Music became a lifelong love. His Harvard roommate and best friend, Donald Sternglanz, introduced Jack to his lovely sister, Muriel, and she and Jack began corresponding. They were married in 1943, and shortly after that, he enlisted in the Navy as a chaplain. He was soon transferred to the Marines and took part in the two Iwo Jima landings and the occupation of Japan. His brother, Harry, and his best friend, Donald, both served in the Armed Services, and both were killed. Jack received his Ph.D. from the Divinity School of the University of Chicago in 1949. After his ordination as a Unitarian minister he served the Unitarian Church in Columbus, Ohio for three years. By this time Jack and Muriel had started their family. Their first son, Peter Brian was born in 1946, followed by Steven Bruce in 1949. Their only daughter, Miriam Ruth, was born in 1952, and their third son, David Michael, in 1954. Peter and Steven preceded their parents in death. Jack served on the faculty of the Divinity School of the University of Chicago from 1951 to 1960 then joined the faculty at Meadville Theological School. In 1968 he was invited to begin a religious studies program as part of the philosophy department at SIU Carbondale. He continued to teach in that department until his retirement in 1984. Jack maintained a strong interest in literature, art and music all his life. He was co-founder of the Southern Illinois Chamber Music Society. He served as honorary minister of Carbondale Unitarian Fellowship for many years, and was instrumental in building the new sanctuary. He was also deeply involved in politics and was one of Paul Simon's stalwart supporters. He and Muriel were generous to a long list of charitable organizations. Muriel died in 2001, having been married to Jack for more than 50 years. He then married Lois Carrier, who survives him. Grandchildren include Megan and Zachary Hayward, the daughter and son of Peter Hayward and Sandra Hayward Bowman. (Megan's son, Jaden, is the only great-grandchild so far.) Miriam Hayward and her husband, Rick Herbert, have a son, Joseph Herbert and a daughter, Gina Hayward. Jack's youngest son, David Goodward and his wife, Margaret, have two children, Gavin and Jenna Goodward. A memorial service honoring John Hayward will be at 1:30 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 3, in Unitarian Fellowship, 105 N. Parrish Lane. Memorials may be made to Southern Illinois Chamber Music Society, Tip Hospice of Southern Illinois, Paul Simon Policy Institute or Good Samaritan Ministries of Carbondale.
