De Soto – JoAnn Smith, 89, of De Soto passed away on August 7, 2017 at 10:06 p.m. at St. Joseph Memorial Hospital, Murphysboro with her loving family by her side.
JoAnn was born on May 22, 1928 in Kingsley, Iowa to Floyd Guy and Gladys (Freeman) Harvey.
On December 20, 1947 she married Leland Smith in Quimby with whom she shared many happy years together until he passed away on June 30, 2016.
Survivors include her son, Brian Smith (Vallarie Erickson) of Littleton, CO; two daughters, Pamela Eaton of De Soto, and Cheryl (James) Williams of Valparaiso, IN; one granddaughter, Christine (Haddad) Chance (Chip) of De Soto; two great-grandchildren, Ethan and Emma Chance of De Soto; and many nieces and nephews.
She is proceeded in death by her parents; husband Leland; brother, Don Harvey; sister-in-law Helen Pope; and son-in-law Ronald D. Eaton Sr.
She worked as bookkeeper for Welded Tube Company of America until her retirement. In spare moments, spending time with her family was her passion. She was happy to leave the hustle and bustle of city life in Chicago for a calmer existence when the couple moved to De Soto. JoAnn was a wonderful wife and mother.
Memorial Services for JoAnn will be at 7:00pm Wednesday, September 20, 2017 in Meredith Funeral Home with Pastor Susan Burnett officiating. Visitation will be from 6:00 – 7:00pm Wednesday at the funeral home.
