James Raymond Hayes

CARBONDALE- James "Jim" Raymond Hayes, 79, passed away on Friday, March 24, 2023 in Carbondale.

Jim was born on December 12, 1943 in Danville to James Hayes and Evelyn Sims. He earned a bachelors degree at University of Illinois Urbana-Champagne, after which he joined the Air Force. Jim worked as a counselor at Menard Correctional Center for many years. Jim was married to Carla Hayes until her death in 1990. He also spent many years with Annetta Hanna. On August 13, 2013, Jim married Melanie Hayes in Murphysboro.

An intellectually curious man, Jim was a student of astrophysics, astronomy, language, and art. He was a carpenter, farmer, builder and nature lover. He had a Bob Dylan song assigned to every person he knew. He loved sci-fi movies and the show Ancient Aliens. He had a big heart and tried his best to help people who needed help. He will certainly be missed by all who knew him.

Jim is survived by his loving wife, Melanie; along with his sister June Hayes, brother-in-law Mark Oshinski, niece Kathleen Oshinski, brother-in-law John Romine, and nephew John Michael Romine.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his sister, Susan Romine.

Private services will be held.

Memorials may be made in Jim's name to the Nature Conservancy.
