James M. 'Jim' Rossiter

James M. 'Jim' Rossiter, 75, of Carbondale, passed away at 8:00 a.m., Saturday, January 24, 2015, in Memorial Hospital of Carbondale. Jim was born March 1, 1939, to Lewis James and Florence (Mitchell) Rossiter. He graduated from University High School in 1957 and then joined the US Army from September 18, 1957 to September 16, 1960. In 1966 he graduated from the School of Agriculture with his bachelor's degree. He was employed by the City of Carbondale Police Department, attaining the rank of Sargeant and retired in 1989 after 25 years of service to the department. On July 18, 1983, he married Judith Carolyn Henderson Gallegly at Carbondale. She survives. Other survivors include a son, James K. Rossiter of Carbondale; a stepson, Robert T. (Karen) Gallegly of Carbindale; a stepdaughter, Reverend Elizabeth A. (Reverend Michael) Fender of Jacksonville; four step grandchildren, Micah, Jonah, and Anna Fender of Jacksonville and Brenden Gallegly of Carbondale; one sister, Nancy Lou (Hiro) Sato of New York, NY. Jim was an avid model railroad enthusiast and a longtime supporter of Saluki Athletics. He also had been an active fisherman and hunter and was a former member of Ducks Unlimited. His memberships include First United Methodist Church, Carbondale; the Fraternal Order of Police; Illinois Police Association; National Model Railroad Association; and the Southern Illinois Train Club. A visitation will be 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. Thursday, January 29, 2015, at the Meredith Funeral Home, Carbondale with a memorial service at 6:00 p.m. A private Entombment with Military services will be held at a later date. Memorials to the First United Methodist Church Building Fund, Huntington's Disease Society of America - Illinois Chapter for research, or the Saluki Athletic Scholarship Fund at the SIU Foundation are the preferred form of remembrance and will be accepted at the funeral home.
