Jack Knupp

Grand Tower - Jack Knupp, 76, passed away at 1:41 p.m. on Friday, January 9, 2015 at St. Joseph Hospital in Murphysboro, with his loving family by his side. Jack was born February 22, 1938 in Grand Tower to Robert and Dorothy (Reed) Knupp. He married the love of his life, Sharon Edwards, on June 25, 1960. Together they shared 54 years of marriage. Jack is survived by his wife, Sharon of Grand Tower; two daughters, Pam (Broderick) Burke of Robards, KY, and Jackie (Jack) Foster of Wasilla, AK; one grandson, Luke Johnson; five brothers, Bobby (Jean) Knupp, Virgil (Joann) Knupp, Doug (Marsha) Knupp, Don (Pat) Knupp and Morty (Carol) Knupp; four sisters, Katheryn (Charlie) Burdick, Linda Wilson, Rita (Norman "Bubba") Raney and Patricia (Jerry) Hart; brother-in-law, Delaine (Beverly) Edwards; and a sister-in-law, Sue (John) Keller. He was preceded in death by his parents. Jack, who served as a towboat captain for 44 years, was known as Captain Jack Whitey" Knupp to those who worked with him on the river. He was the founder and Director of the Mississippi River Museum and Interpretive Center in Grand Tower. He said that over 200 people from Grand Tower have worked on the river and the citizen's value the importance of preserving their river heritage. Services will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Tuesday, January 13, 2015 at the Meredith Grand Tower Chapel in Grand Tower with Rev. Bobby Henson officiating. Interment will be at Walker Hill Cemetery in Grand Tower. Visitation will be held from 5:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. on Monday, January 12, 2015 at the Chapel. Memorial donations are the preferred form of remembrance and may be made to the Mississippi River Museum and Interpretive Center in Grand Tower, and will be accepted by Meredith Funeral Home.
