Carbondale - Jack Henry Bass, 87, passed away peacefully at 5:40 p.m. on Saturday, August 8, 2015 at Herrin Hospital, with his family by his side. Jack was born April 20, 1928 in Bridgeport, IL to Samuel Lewis and Olivia Frances (Tipton) Bass. He married the love of his life, Shirley Ann Baltzell on August 8, 1951 in Bridgeport. She survives and is of Herrin, IL. Other survivors include his two sons, Alec B. Bass of Carbondale, IL and Michael T. (Christine) Bass of Makanda, IL; two daughters, Julie D. (David) Trost, and Jill L. (Bruce) Smith, all of Marion, IL; brother, Thomas Lewis Bass of Colona; sister, Martha Ann Woodriffee of Sun Lakes, AZ; sister-in-law, Janice Kay Litts of Lakeland, FL; eight grandchildren, Kristopher T. (Rebekah), Jackson R. (Anne), and Jeremiah B. (Casie) Bass, Daniel J. (Sara), Thomas A. (Nicole), and Steven M. Trost, Christopher J. and Sara A. Martinez; and one great grandchild, Aiden Kane Bass; and many cousins, nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers, Samuel Wayne Bass, Gerald Lewis Bass and Shirley Alan Bass, and one sister, Wanda Elaine Webb. Jack was a Civil Engineer for 50 years, owning Jack H. Bass and Associates of Carbondale, IL, until his retirement in 2004. He was a member of Grace United Methodist Church of Carbondale, IL, and lifetime member of the Masonic Order, Lodge #386 of Bridgeport, IL, I.R.L.S.A. (Illinois Reg. Land Surveyors Association) and I.S.P.E. (Illinois Surveyors Professional Engineers). He loved going to his cabin by the Shawnee National Forest where he would fish and hunt. This was a wonderful stress reliever for him. He proudly served our country in the Navy from 1946 - 1951. Services will be at 1:00 p.m., on Saturday, August 15, 2015 at Meredith Funeral Home of Carbondale, IL, with Rev. Donald G. Carlton officiating. Burial with Military Honors, conducted by the Carroll P. Foster Post #3455, and the U.S. Navy Honor Guard, will be held at Ebenezer Hall Cemetery in Buncombe, IL. Visitation will be held from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Friday, August 14, 2015 at the funeral home. Memorial donations are the preferred form of remembrance and may be made to Ebenezer Hall Cemetery or National Rifle Association and will be accepted at the funeral home.
