DE SOTO-George William “Bill” Breeden, 91, died on Friday, September, 21, 2018 at 12:31 a.m. in Du Quoin Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. Bill was born on Monday, June 13, 1927 in Murphysboro to Clarence Earl and Sussie Gurnie (Elms) Breeden.
Bill enlisted in the United States Navy on May 7, 1945 until his honorable discharge on August 2, 1946 as Seaman first class U.S.N.R.
Bill married Margaret Carletta Griffin on December 31, 1947 in Osceola, Arkansas and they spent many wonderful years together until her passing.
Bill was proceeded in death by sisters, Minnie Eileen Jones of De Soto and Helen Marie Shirley of De Soto; brother, Lewis Earl Breeden of Baldwin Park, CA; sister-in-law, Norma Tripp; nephews, Norman Breeden and Marvin Earl Jones; and good friend, Priscilla Holt.
Bill is survived by daughters, Jackie Marie (Steve) Knowle of Dallas, Georgia, Dana Raye (Frank) Smith of De Soto and Lisa Gaye Jacquot of De Soto; eight Grandchildren, Jeff Toberman (Sharli Snider) of De Soto, Tad Thompson (Tracy) of Herrin, Travis Thompson of DeSoto, Robin Crabtree (Chris) of Murphysboro, Josh Cox (Michelle) of Murphysboro, Jodi Tuthill (Wayne) of Vergennes, Robbey Smith (Angie) of Marion, Brandy Kellerman (Luke) of Pinckneyvile; sixteen Great Grandchildren; two Great-Great Grandchildren and nineteen nieces and nephews and sister-in-law Mona Walters (Roger) Hallidayboro.
He was a rural letter carrier for thirty-three years working for the United States Postal Service until his retirement in 1989. He was a member of De Soto Masonic Lodge 287, Rural Letter Carrier Association member, De Soto Township Volunteer Fire Department Charter Member of De Soto, Fraternal Order of Eagles, Board of Education Advisory Member for De Soto Grade School.
In memory of Bill, the family would like to extend a very special thank you to the caring staff at Du Quoin Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.
Visitation will take place from 10 a.m. until 12:00 p.m. at Meredith Funeral Home in Carbondale on Saturday, September 29, 2018, immediately followed by a graveside service at De Soto City Cemetery officiated by Doris McKee. Memorial tributes are the preferred form of remembrance and can be made to the De Soto Education Foundation, De Soto Park, De Soto Fire Department and De Soto City Cemetery. Envelopes will be provided at the Meredith Funeral Home of Carbondale who is in charge of arrangements.
