George Edward O'Hara

December 26, 1926 — August 5, 2016

Carbondale - George Edward O'Hara, 89, of Carbondale, entered his heavenly home Friday, August 5, 2016. He was preceded in death by his parents and all of his siblings.



He was a graduate of Carbondale Community High School, having been captain of both the basketball team and the football team. He was an avid and proud fan of the Terriers, listening to the games on the radio if he couldn't attend.



He served in the U S Navy as a Higgins Boat pilot at the close of World War II and was honorably discharged in 1946.



He retired from employment with Southern Illinois University after 33 years of service to devote himself to the past times he loved: hunting and fishing. He is well-remembered by his friends as a good natured man always ready to lend a hand.



He is survived by the love of his life, Margaret Ellen O'Hara of Carbondale, his daughter, Teresa Bell of Hollywood, Florida, five grandchildren and nine Great-grandchildren.



A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m., Tuesday, August 9, 2016 at Murdale Baptist Church. The family asks that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the Samaritan's Purse Christmas Shoebox Fund c/o Murdale Baptist Church, Carbondale, Illinois.
