Frances M. Smith

Carbondale - Frances Marie Smith, 96, passed away 1:15 a.m. on Saturday, November 16, 2013 at Helia Healthcare of Carbondale. Frances was born in De Soto to John Herman and Phoebe Hope (Williams) DeWitt. She married Russell Lynn Smith Sr. on January 7, 1939 in Jackson, MO. He preceded her in death. Survivors include, her son and daughter-in-law, Russell L. and Carolyn Smith Jr. of Carbondale; brother, Ralph G. DeWitt of East Peoria; two grandchildren, Timothy L. (Jennifer) Smith of Carbondale and Tammy L. (Mark) Miller of Springfield; six great grandchildren, Kelsey Larkin, Wesley Smith, Jonathon, Adam, Matt and Katie Watson; and one great great-grandson, Lane Smith. She was preceded in death by three brothers, Clyde H. Dewitt, Lenard E. DeWitt and Arther G. DeWitt; four sisters, Edith M. DeWitt, Opal L. DeWitt, Dorothy E. DeWitt and Ruby M. DeWitt and her parents. Frances was of Christian faith, and was loved by many. A Graveside service will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, November 20, 2013 at Pleasant Grove Memorial Park, in Murphysboro, with Rev T.J. Gentry officiating. There will be no visitation. Memorial donations are the preferred form of remembrance, and may be made to Hospice of Southern Illinois and will be accepted by Meredith Funeral Home, Carbondale.
