Floyd "Bub" Shirley, 91, of Desoto passed away Saturday, December 31, 2011, at 9:35 a.m., at Memorial Hospital of Carbondale. Funeral service will be held at 10:00 a.m., Thursday, January 5, 2012 at Meredith Funeral Home, Carbondale with Reverend Susan Burnett officiating. Interment will be held at DeSoto Cemetery, DeSoto, with military rites at the gravesite. Friends may call from 5 until 8 p.m., January 4, 2012 at the funeral home. Memorial donations may be made Hospice of Southern Illinois Inc., 204 Halfway Rd., Marion, IL. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home. "Bub" was born June 11, 1920 in DeSoto to Clarence and Edna (Hicks) Shirley. He married Helen Marie "Breeden" Shirley on May 19, 1941 at Cape Girardeau, MO. She preceded him in death October 3, 2003. Survivors include three daughters Karen Bowlby of DeSoto, Carole Shirley and her fianc�� Pete Stefko of DeSoto, and Cynthia Jane Cook of DeSoto; two sons, Dennis Ray and his wife Anita of DeSoto, Robert Shirley and his finance Cissy Cox of DeSoto; four grandchildren, Anthony, Jacob, Joshua and Seth Shirley; seven great grandchildren Kyla, Anthony Brian, Kyle, Trenton, Anthony Cole, Trenton Shirley and Shiann Woodside. He was preceded in death by his parents, and infant twins, Paul Wayne and Naomi Kay Shirley; and three brothers Wesley, Lesley and Cleatus. Floyd was a member of the DeSoto Masonic Lodge, and Eastern Star, DeSoto, a member of United Methodist Church of DeSoto, and a member of Service Employees International Union Local 316. Floyd retired after 20 years as a custodian from SIU and spent thirty years in the US Navy retiring as a Chief Petty Officer and he served in World War II.
