Edward John Hogan, 91, of Carbondale passed away 9:35 a.m., Thursday, March 6, 2014, at the Veterans Affairs Medical Center, Marion. A Funeral Mass will be held at 11:00 a.m., Wednesday, March 12, 2014, at the St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church, Carbondale, with Father Robert Flannery officiating. Visitation will be from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the Meredith Funeral Home, Carbondale. Interment will be at a later date in Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery, St. Louis, Missouri. Memorials are the preferred form of remembrance. They may be made to the Rotary District 6510 Belize Children's Program, 819 S. Drury Ave., Carbondale, IL 62902 or to the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2605, P.O. Box 113, Carbondale, IL 62903, and will be accepted by Meredith Funeral Home, 300 S. University Ave., Carbondale, IL 62901. Ed was born in St. Louis, MO, to Edward and Grace (Kilfoy) Hogan on April 10, 1922. He attended Farragut Grade School and Beaumont High School in St. Louis. He received his Bachelor of Science degree from Southern Illinois University, Carbondale, in 1971. Ed served in the U.S. Navy from 1942 to 1946 throughout the Pacific, receiving various medals. In 1971, he moved to Carbondale and to this day calls Carbondale his home. Ed was a member of the St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department from 1946 - 1971. He became a member of the Carbondale Police Department in 1971 and served as Chief of Police from the late 1970's to the early 1990's. Ed's memberships include: St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church, Carbondale; the Illinois Police Chiefs Association; International Chiefs of Police; Illinois Police Training Board; States Association of Chiefs of Police; The Rotary Club of Carbondale and Veterans of Foreign War Post 2605. He was married to the late Mary (Conley) Hogan and has been married to Merilyn (Whittaker) Hogan for the past 42 years. He was the beloved father of Maureen (Moe) Laramie, Mike, Tim, Terry, Larry, Ed, Neil, John and Katie Hogan and the late Kevin Hogan. He has 14 grandchildren and 21 great grandchildren. Ed was the loving brother of Jack, Joe (Mary, deceased) and Julie Hogan. He is preceded in death by June Hogan, Don (Jackie) Hogan and Patricia Pinski. He was the brother-in-law of Mike Pinski. Besides his Hogan family, Ed was the well-loved brother-in-law and uncle to the Whittaker family. He leaves behind Judy and Tom Morgan of Ashby, IL, James and Mary Ann Whittaker of Crestview, FL, Sandra Whittaker of Denton, TX, and many nephews and nieces. His Carbondale family included many close friends and the ones with whom he loved sharing meals, games, stories and coffee. Ed loved his life, family and his church. He especially loved the many large family gatherings where stories were exchanged with his siblings and children. He will be greatly missed by the Hogan and Whittaker families as well as his large circle of friends and morning coffee buddies. The family would like to express their sincere appreciation to our nephew, Tom Pinski, and his wife, Tammi, for all of the care and support they provided during this difficult time. We are also grateful to Father Bob Flannery of the St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church for his friendship and encouragement.
