MARION-Dr. William G. (Bill) Kammlade, Jr., 92, of Marion, and Estes Park, CO died Tuesday February 20, 2018 in Marion. He was born in Champaign, April 2, 1925 the son of Dr. Wm. G. Kammlade, Sr. and Mary (Bell) Kammlade. He married Helen Louise Sieferman in Urbana, June 13, 1948 who preceded him in death on May 30, 1994. He was also preceded in death by his parents, daughter, Nancy K. Leimgruber and grandson, Matthew Leimgruber.
On March 12, 2010 he married Mary Andrea Woods of Des Moines, Iowa. She survives. He is also survived by his son John G. Kammlade of Ft. Collins, CO and daughter, Marilyn K. Litchfield of Newark, DE, 4 grandchildren, 3 great-grandchildren, and son-in-law, Richard M. Leimbruber of St. Louis, MO.
After serving in the U.S. Navy in WWII, he graduated with honors and was awarded a Wright Fellowship for doctoral studies at the University of Illinois along with other academic and scientific honorary recognitions and memberships. He revised and co-authored with his father an internationally recognized text in Livestock Production, held miscellaneous patents and served on the faculties of Texas A&M University, Southern Illinois University, and invitational Fulbright guest professorships at the University of Gottingen, Germany and the University of Novi Sad, Yugoslavia.
He was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Carbondale and recently attended the Aldersgate Methodist Church of Marion. He was an Elk for 61 years. He was especially fond of his pets and had a very special understanding way with animals. Enjoyment of his family and close friendships, many far ranging academic, scientific and business interests, American history, art, travel, the outdoors and observing and appreciating the beauties of nature provided for his feelings of having lived a very interesting, fortunate and rewarding life. He will be greatly missed by his family and many friends.
Memorials may be made to the VA Community Living Center at 2401 West Main Street., Marion, Illinois 62959 for the use of resident’s needs.
A private service following cremation will be held at Woodlawn Cemetery, Urbana.
