Dr. Douglas Calvin Smith

Carbondale - Dr. Douglas Calvin Smith, 65, passed away on Thursday, January 22, 2015 at his home. Dr. Douglas Smith was born August 5, 1949 in Kokomo, Indiana to Calvin Eugene and Betty Lou (Harrison) Smith. After his mother Betty, passed away, his father remarried, Agnes Smith. Both she and his father precede him in death. He leaves behind two sons, Jason "Jesse" Calvin, and his wife Katrina Smith, of Celebration, Florida, and Gabriel Silas Smith of San Jose, California; one brother, Scott, and his wife, Sharon, Smith of Grafton, North Dakota; and three grandchildren, Dylan Andre Smith, Delphine Helene Sequoia Smith and Adelyn Cecile Smith. Dr. Douglas Smith had been a resident of Carbondale since 1981; and was an Emeritus Professor in the Brain & Cognitive Sciences Program, Department of Psychology at the Southern Illinois University of Carbondale for 30 years until his retirement in 2009. He completed two years of postdoctoral training at the University of Illinois-Champaign Urbana where he worked with Dr. Joseph Malpeli on reversible inactivation in electrophysiological experiments in the visual system and Dr. William Greenough investigating neuroanatomical correlates of visual experience and deprivation. He received his Ph.D. at Kansas State University. His interests included, Neurophysiology, Vision, Development, Learning & Memory, and Recovery of Function. A Visitation will be held from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. on Friday, January 30, 2015 at Meredith Funeral Home of Carbondale, with a brief Memorial service following at 7:00 p.m. Memorial donations are the preferred form of remembrance, and may be made to the Child Neurology Foundation at www.childneurologyfoundation.org/donate and will be accepted at the funeral home.
