Carbondale - Dorothy Theresa (Tabbert) Yates, 93, of Carbondale, and formerly of Urbana passed away at 7:30 am, August 27, 2012, at her home in Carbondale. Dorothy was born November 30, 1918, daughter of Col. Theodore and Ethel (Helding) Tabbert in Racine, Wisconsin. She married Elmer Robert (Bob)Yates on December 19, 1941 in Somers, Wisconsin. He preceded her in death on December 19, 1982. She leaves behind to mourn her loss, two daughters, Jacqueline (Paul) Scolari of DeSoto, Illinois, and Kathryn (Marshall) Ninmer of Fairbanks, Alaska; five grandchildren, Katherine (Jeremy) Childress, Sarah Scolari, Mary (Andrew) Reece, Martha (Andrew) Merrill, Emily (Rob) Proper; seven great grandchildren and one great great grandson. She was preceded in death by her parents; a brother, Col. Evan T. Tabbert and a sister Priscilla J. Tabbert. Dorothy was employed by Urbana Public Schools where she taught 6th grade for 25 years at Flossie Wiley School. In later years, she often reminisced about her teaching experiences, her friends and colleagues, and the many students who had been in her classroom. She was truly fond of her students and their accomplishments in her class. She attended Wheaton College for three years where she was a classmate of Billy Graham and his future wife. Later she received both Bachelors (1940) and Masters (1954) degrees from the University of Illinois. Prior to moving to Southern Illinois (2003), she was a member of St. Peters United Church of Christ. She also was an active member of the Order of Eastern Star, Hope chapter 104 (Past Matron), Amaranth Court No. 17, Knights Templar 16 and 68 auxiliaries, and Red Cross of Constantine auxiliary; Kappa Delta Pi Honor Society, Delta Kappa Gamma, the Urbana Education Association, Illinois Education Association, a lifetime member of the National Education Association, and a member of Tri-T. A graveside service will be held at Woodlawn Cemetery in Urbana at 2:30 p.m. on Friday, August 31, 2012 with Rev. John Annable officiating. Memorial donations may be made to the Champaign Urbana Humane Society (1911 E.
