Claude Eugene Rider

June 29, 1931 — January 17, 2014

Murphysboro - Claude Eugene Rider, 82, died at 2:30 a.m. on Friday, January 17, 2014 at Rehab & Care Center of Jackson County in Murphysboro. Claude was born on June 29, 1931 in Granite City, IL to Eugene and Julia (Spindler) Rider. He was a U.S. Army veteran who proudly served during the Korean War. He was wounded in the battle at Pork Chop Hill, for which he received the Purple Heart. He later worked at Granite City Steel as a quality control inspector until his retirement. His passion in life was baseball, particularly the St. Louis Cardinals. His father took him to his first baseball game when Claude was 10 years old, and went so far as to nickname Claude, "Ripper" after the Cardinal first baseman, Ripper Collins. Claude is survived by his cousin, Emily (Eugene) Timpe of Carbondale; cousins Nancy, Tyler and Andrew Sheeley of Carterville, and Kirk and Cody Annable of Centralia. We would like to express our deep appreciation for the many friends of the Parkview Caf in Marine, IL, who were like family to Claude. A memorial service will be Wednesday, January 29 at 11:00 a.m. at the Sunset Hill Cemetery Chapel, 50 Fountain Drive, Glen Carbon, IL. At Claude's request, Rev. John Annable will officiate.
