Carolyn White

CARBONDALE – Carolyn White, 78, of Carbondale passed away at 8:23 P.M., Saturday, September 9, 2017 in her residence. 



Carolyn was born on August 13, 1939 to Cecil Valentine and Vesta Ivern (Bradley) White in Anna.    She is survived by two brothers and one sister, Kenneth (Jean) White of Land O’ Lakes, FL;  Cecil (Ruben Artery) White of Hayward, CA; and sister Loretta (White) Ruff of North Myrtle Beach, SC.  Other survivors include aunt Juanita Aldredge of Ottawa, sister-in-law Pam White of Makanda, and many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends at Liberty Estates.    



Carolyn is preceded in death by her parents, sister Mary (White) Meek and brother Sam White.    



Carolyn’s career as a nurse included serving at Anna State Hospital, the Illinois Division of Services for Crippled Children, and at Rockwell International in Centralia.  She was hired to start and operate the first county health department in Randolph County.  Her career began at Deaconess Hospital in St. Louis, MO where she earned her Registered Nurse License.  From there she continued her studies at Southern Illinois University in Edwardsville where she received her Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing.   



Carolyn proudly served our country as a Captain in the United States Air Force as a nurse during the Vietnam conflict.    



We will forever carry the love and laughter she gave, including her endless compassion.  She had a big heart that was devoted to helping others.  Carolyn took early retirement to become a loving caregiver of her mom, a task that lasted for twelve years. 



Services will be 2:00 p.m. Sunday, September 24, 2017 at Meredith Funeral Home, Carbondale with Pastor Wes Henson officiating.  Visitation will be from 1:00 to 2:00 P.M. at the funeral home.  Burial will follow in Lipe Cemetery. 



Memorials are the preferred form of remembrance, and can be made to Hospice of Southern Illinois or the American Cancer Society.
