Carl Berkey

Carbondale - Darl Carl Berkey, 92 of Makanda, IL went home to be with the Lord Jesus at 4:40 p.m. on Monday, May 20, 2013 at the Carbondale Nursing and Rehab Center. Carl was born April 12, 1921 to Harry and Trella (Carrel) Berkey in Bedford County, PA. He married Imogene Audrey Davis August 24, 1944 at the First Baptist Church in Carbondale, IL. Carl is survived by his wife, Imogene; one son, Carl Gene Berkey; daughter, Marla Jean Owens (John) of Cedar Rapids, Iowa; and six grandchildren, Danny Joe Riddle of Waynesville, MO, Danielle Dee Hindman (Phillip) of Murphysboro, IL, Jeremy Ryan Owens of Burlington, Iowa, Lindsay Renee Owens of Columbus, Ohio, Zachary Thomas Owens of Cedar Rapids, Iowa and Rachel Elizabeth Owens of Cedar Rapids, Iowa; two great grandchildren, Brock Raymond McBride and Ivan Phillip Hindman both of Murphysboro, IL; two step great grandchildren, Alex McBride and Garth McBride of Murphysboro, IL; siblings Shimer (Shirley) Berkey of State College, PA, Raymond Berkey of Fishertown, PA, Hattie (Dale) Berkey of Johnstown, PA and Chester (Barbara) Berkey of Fishertown, PA; and many loving nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by a granddaughter, Catina Marie McBride. Carl was a member of the Union Hill Christian Church, Carbondale and had been a trusttee for several years. He worked as a truck driver for many years for Kenneth Lingle, worked for the Campus Cab in Carbondale, was a postal truck driver for a few years and worked at SIU Carbondale for 5 years and retired in 1987. He served in WW2 in the United States Army as a cook from September 1942-1945. Services will be at 1:00 p.m. Friday, May 24, 2013 at Meredith Funeral Home, Carbondale, with Pastor Gerald Holmes officiating. Military Rites services will be performed by the American Legion Post #127 Color Guard, with burial at Pleasant Grove Memorial Park, Murphysboro. Family and friends may call upon the funeral home from 5:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. on Thursday, May 23, 2013. The preferred form of remembrance is Memorial donations to the family, and will be accepted at the funeral home.
