Betty Jo Hill

DeSoto - Betty Jo Hill, 75, of Carterville, and a longtime resident of DeSoto, passed away at 3:06 p.m., Friday, November 22, at the Saline Care Center in Harrisburg. Betty Jo was born in Herrin on July 6, 1938, the daughter of Claude Jackson and Ruba G. (Sanders) Hicks. She married Francis Dean Hill on August 23, 1959 in Carbondale. He passed away July 27, 2012. She is also preceded in death by her parents. Survivors include one daughter and son-in-law, Cynthia Sue (Brian) McGhee of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma; a son and daughter-in-law, Francis Edward Hill and Tracy Zoeller of Marion; four grandchildren, Robert Ryan (Hayley) McGhee, Ashley Sue (Shawn) Steggles, Nicholas Edward and Amber Nicole McGhee all of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma; two step-grandchildren, Tyra Hill and Tate Zoeller of Marion; a great step-grandson, Kyton Hill of Marion; a sister, Donna Sue Jordan of Dallas, Texas; and two nephews, Shawn Matthew and Eric Allen Jordan both of Austin, Texas. She graduated with two degrees from Southern Illinois University, Carbondale. Betty had taught Home Economics in Gorham and Carterville and had been employed by the State of Illinois Department of Adult and Vocational Education for 20 years before retiring in December of 1991. Betty Jo was active in several organizations including the Williamson County Homemakers Extension, the Jackson County Retired Teachers Association, the Illinois Vocational Home Economics Teachers Association (IVHETA) and the IVA. She loved genealogy and tracing family history. She was a member of the First Baptist Church, DeSoto, where she was the organist and had been a Sunday School teacher. Also, she had served as a den mother and a Girl Scout leader. Betty was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and will be sorely missed by her family, friends and relatives. Funeral service will be held 10 a.m., Monday, December 2, 2013 at the Meredith Funeral Home, Carbondale, with Rev. Paul Hicks officiating. Interment will be in DeSoto Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Sunday, December 1, 2013 at the Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to the First Baptist Church, DeSoto or to the Murdale Baptist Church and will be accepted at the funeral home.
