Betty Jo Braswell

CARBONDALE – Betty Jo Braswell, age 93, passed away on Tuesday, January 28, 2025 in Herrin with her family by her side.

Betty was born on May 23, 1931 in Carbondale to Lawrence and Bessie (Barnett) Hopkins. Betty married Harold Braswell on February 14, 1948 at Carbondale. He preceded her in death on October 18, 2001.

Betty and Harold created their own missionary ministry which helped build churches and feed children in Honduras for over 20 years. They were also involved with No Greater Love Ministries for many years. Betty loved sharing the love of Jesus with anyone she met. She enjoyed playing the piano and singing to family and friends.

Betty is survived by her children, Dianne Woods of Nederland, TX, Carol Cotham of Carbondale, Marsha Brewton of Matthews, NC, Rick (Roxanne) Braswell, of Port Neches, TX and Kathy (Roy) Throop of Springfield; many grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren; and sister, Donna (Richard) Chambers of Springfield.

She was preceded in death by her loving husband, Harold Braswell, parents; and three brothers, Charles, Robert and David Hopkins; two sons-in-law, Gary Woods and Ed Brewton.

Funeral services for Betty will be held at 12:00pm on Friday, January 31, 2025 at Meredith Funeral Home in Carbondale with Rev. Jim Cooper officiating. Burial will follow at Boskydell Cemetery in Carbondale. Visitation will be from 11:00am until the time of service at the funeral home on Friday.

Memorials may be made in Betty’s name to No Greater Love Ministries and will be accepted at the funeral home.
