Betty Ann Mcneill Lipe

October 21, 1939 — February 18, 2023

CARBONDALE – Betty Ann Lipe, 83, passed away on Saturday, February 18, 2023 at Heartland Regional Medical Center in Marion.


Betty was born on October 21, 1939 to Lewis O. McNeill Jr. and Gladys L. (Menees-McNeill) Littlefield in Mound City. She married Bill Lipe and he preceded her in death.


Betty loved to sew and crochet and was very good at it. She worked at various sewing factories throughout her working years. Her last job was at Walmart in the toy section. She disrupted many a child’s playtime there. Country music was a big part of her life, especially old country. Her final times were spent listening to Patsy Cline.


Survivors include five children: Darlene Smart of Texas, Tina Smart of Texas, Lisa Chamness of Carbondale, Sara Hagen of Murphysboro, and Lewis Short of Arizona; two brothers: Charles McNe ill (Paula) of Murphysboro, James “Ricky” Littlefield of Cottage Hills, IL; four sisters: Judy (Terry) Ridings of Murphysboro, Kathy (Paul) Perez of Knoxville, TN, Brenda (Bob) Davis of Decatur, TN, and Nila Henson of Murphysboro, as well as many nieces and nephews. Her family meant everything to her, especially her grandchildren. When asked what was keeping her will to live so strong, she replied, “my grandkids”. She was blessed with several. Her grandchildren are Thomas Rogers of Seattle, WA, Theresa Rogers of Rockford, IL, Ryan Chamness of Carbondale, Jamelah Jones of Las Vegas, NV, Shyreese Rice of Carbondale, Dajour Yarbrough and Malik Allen of Denver, CO, Blaine Short of Mt Vernon; her great grandchildren are Elaine and Elizabeth Rogers, Selena, Joselyn, and Sophia Olvera, Elena and Joanna Altamirano, Juelz Rice, and Marleigh Yarbrough.


Betty was preceded in death by both her parents, her husband Bill Lipe, her brother Eddie Lee McNeill, and three infant brothers, and two sister-in-laws, Delores (Condor) McNeill and Phyllis (Moutria) McNeill.


Funeral services will take place on 12:00 p.m. on Friday, February 24, 2023 at Meredith Funeral Home. Burial will take place at Alto Pass Cemetery. Visitation will be from 11:00 a.m. until the time of service on Friday.


In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the American Kidney Fund.
