Bernice M. Warren, nee May, died at 7:50 a.m., Tuesday, January 10, 2012 in Herrin Hospital after a brief illness. Bernice was born November 10, 1920 in Creal Springs to Charles Sr. and Maggie May. She attended grade schools in Johnson County and graduated from Carterville High School in 1939. She married Tommy Warren on March 13, 1943 in Cape Girardeau, after which Tommy served in Western Europe with the U.S. Army through the duration of WWII. He preceded her in death October 29,2002. After the war Tommy and Bernice made Carbondale their home except for six year retirement stay in Sebring, FL. 1980-1986 Bernice loved her family and devoting time to her church. She had been a member of Lakeland Baptist and more recently belonged to Walnut Street Baptist Church in Carbondale. Her working career besides being a homemaker, included the Good Luck Glove factory 1939-1943, SIU Food Service 1960-1963, Carbondale Memorial Hospital 1973-1979, and a volunteer at Memorial Hospital 2002-2005. Survivors include her sister Billie Gulledge, Jerseyville, IL; brother Charlie (Vivian) May, Carterville; daughters Joyce (Larry) Eastwood, Crainville; Janet (Les) Grove, Johnsburg, IL; son Jimmy (Linda) Warren, Owensboro, KY; grandchildren Susan Warren and Krista (Mark) Faver, Owensboro, KY; Matt (Robyn) Warren also of Owensboro; Dr. Brent (Melanie) Eastwood, Santa Fe, NM; Steve (Annie) Eastwood, Sherman Oaks, CA; Cortnee (Chris) Snell, Lakemoor, IL; T.J. Grove, Johnsburg, IL; nine great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews. In addition to her beloved husband Tommy, she was preceded in death by her parents, sisters Lucille Heck, brother-in-law Kenneth Heck, and Ruby Aldine Scott, brother-in-law Earl Scott; and grandson Brandon Grove. In lieu of flowers, gifts to the Walnut Street Baptist Church New Building Fund would be greatly appreciated. Bernice will always be remembered as a loving wife, mother, grandmother, and cherished GG Ma. Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m., Saturday, January 14, 2012 at Meredith Funeral Home in Carbondale with Rev. Wes Henson officiating. Interment will follow at Pleasant Grove Memorial Park. Visitation will be from 11:00 a.m. until the time of service at the funeral home.
