Angela Battaglia Rubin

December 26, 1930 — February 11, 2013

Carbondale - Angela Battaglia Rubin, 82, beloved friend of many and mother of four, passed away in peace at 12:55 p.m. on Monday, February 11, 2013 at her home. Angela was born December 26, 1930 to Antonio Guiseppe and Agnes (Peters) Battaglia at Saint James Hospital in Chicago Heights. She was particularly grateful for her undergraduate education by Franciscan nuns, who were so influential all her life. She received her undergraduate degree from the University of St. Francis, and her Master's in Library Science from DePaul University, Chicago. She moved to Carbondale in the late 1950's to accept a position at Morris Library at Southern Illinois University. She met Harris Bernard Rubin, PhD, in an apartment above Jeffrey's Laundromat, at a friend's party. They were married on June 11, 1960 in Chicago Heights. Angela accepted a position as an Assistant Education Librarian in January 1976 at Morris Library at SIU, where she worked as a Catalogue and Reference Librarian for many years before she retired from the Humanities Division of the library at the end of 1995. She was a very gifted Research Librarian and was beloved by faculty and students alike. One of her favorite assignments was to help the Department of Foreign Languages and Literatures. Her ability to find obscure articles in multiple languages was legendary. She never gave up on a search, no matter how long it took. Though she suffered from multiple illnesses throughout her retirement, Angela never lost her love of God, her children, grandchildren, friends, and a joyful zest for life. Angela is survived by her four children, Amy Lenore and husband Tony Edwin Ralls, of Carbondale, Chad Anthony Rubin, M.D, FACS and his partner Charles Michael Sandlin of Columbia, S.C., Thea F. Rubin and husband Timothy Larson of Ferguson, MO., and Garth Andrew Rubin of Dubuque, IA; two loving grandchildren, Sidney Palmer Rubin and Talianna Marie Rubin; and one brother, Joseph and wife "Timmy" Battaglia of Orland Park, IL, and many nieces, nephews and cousins. Angela was preceded in death by her parents, and her husband, Harry, on April 13, 1999, her nephew, Bart Battaglia, as well as several infant siblings. She was a member of St Francis Xavier Catholic Church of Carbondale, The American Library Association, and other professional memberships. A Catholic Mass Funeral will be held at St Francis Xavier Catholic Church of Carbondale on Monday, February 18, 2013 at 11:00 a.m., with Father Robert Flannery officiating. Interment will be at St Andrew Cemetery in Murphysboro. Visitation will be Sunday, February 17, 2013 from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Meredith Funeral Home. Toward the end of visitation, there will be a Vigil Prayer Service. Memorial donations are the preferred form of remembrance and may be made to either the Humanities Collection Endowment Fund at Morris Library SIUC Foundation, Colyer Hall, Mailcode 6805, Southern Illinois University, Carbondale, IL 62901-9988 or St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church. Envelopes will be available at Meredith Funeral Home, Carbondale. She will be greatly missed by those who knew her.
