Allen D. Vancil

Allen D. Vancil, 81, of rural Makanda passed away at 9:24 p.m. on Saturday, February 16, 2013 at his residence. Allen was born on August 21, 1931 to Lee Vancil and Hazel (Rendleman) Vancil at Cobden, Illinois. He married Wonda Lue Gee on June 8, 1951 in Osceola, AR. To their marriage was born a daughter, Sharon. Survivors include his daughter and son-in-law, Sharon V. and Rev. John E. Sims of Carbondale; one granddaughter and her husband, Emelie and Tim Mies of Mahomet; two great grandchildren, Grace and Nicholas Mies of Mahomet. He also leaves behind his precious dog, Sadie. He is preceded in death by his wife; his parents; his grandson, John Adam Sims; his brother, Robert Vancil; and his sister and brother-in-law, Emelie and Jack Entsminger of California. He was a member of First United Methodist Church of Carbondale for 42 years, and was a former member of the Evergreen Cemetery Board, Makanda. Allen was a 5th generation farmer on the family farm, which is now a part of Giant City Park. He was also a 60 plus years member of the Laborers' International Union Local 773. Marion, Illinois. Funeral service will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday, February 20, 2013 at Meredith Funeral Home, Carbondale with Reverends Alan Rhein and John Annable officiating. Interment will be at Evergreen Cemetery, Makanda. Visitation will be held from 5:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. on Tuesday, February 19, 2013 at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to First United Methodist Church of Carbondale, Evergreen Cemetery of Makanda, or to Hospice of Southern Illinois, Inc. and will be accepted by the funeral home.
