Carbondale - Dorothy Thompson, 88, passed away Monday, September 29, 2014 in Memorial Hospital of Carbondale. Dorothy was born June 25, 1926 in Carbondale to Elmer and Effie (Cannon) Stephens. She married Leonard Thompson on August 20, 1944 in Carbondale. He preceded her in death October 12, 1980. Dorothy was employed as a secretary at SIU before retiring in 1986. She was a member of Walnut Street Baptist Church since 1946. Other memberships included Jackson County Farm Bureau, AARP chapter 504, Carbondale, National Association of Retired Federal Employees, SIU Emeritus Association and Buckles Unit of Jackson County Home Extension. Dorothy loved her family, her church and her many friends. She is survived by her son, Steve Thompson of Lake Havasu City, Arizona; daughter, Linda Thompson of Carbondale; sister and brother-in-law Joyce and Don Smith of Carbondale; nephew, Randall Smith of Carbondale; niece and family Pam and Ron McCollom; and great-niece Jenny McCollom all of Mulkeytown. Dorothy was preceded in death by her husband and her parents. Services will be at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, October 3, 2014 at Meredith Funeral Home in Carbondale with Rev. Wes Henson officiating. Burial will be in Murdale Gardens of Memory in Murphysboro. Visitation will be from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Thursday, October 2, 2014 at the funeral home. The preferred form of remembrance is a contribution to Walnut Street Baptist Church Building Fund or Hospice of Southern Illinois and envelopes will be available at the funeral home.
